It was founded in 1980 as the successor of the Clement Commission (1914), the Commission for the Publication of the Cyril-Methodian Sources (1934) and the Cyril-Methodian Commission (1977) of the BAS. The Center is the only national and international institution whose activity is entirely dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the work of Cyril and Methodius, their literary heritage and its influence in the Bulgarian and European cultural tradition. Research is being done on the earliest period of Bulgarian written culture and Slavic literature; archeographic research and research, digitization and socialization of medieval manuscripts are carried out; the Cyrillic-Methodian tradition is explored as one of the markers of the Bulgarian cultural heritage; PhD students and specialists from abroad are trained.
