The Center for Excellence "Heritage BG," with the kind assistance of the International Trade and Cultural Center GEOPAN, the National Library "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" and the publishing house "Bulgarian Bestseller" are pleased to invite you to the opening of the exhibition "Macedonia in European Historical Cartography - Mid-19th Century - Balkan Wars 1912-1913".
The exhibition is dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the publication in Strasbourg (France) of the first map created, lithographed, and printed by the Bulgarian Alexander Hadjiruset, "Map of Present-day Bulgaria, Thrace, Macedonia, and the Adjacent Lands."
The exhibition consists of panels with dozens of ethnographic maps, mostly by European cartographers, but also includes maps by authors from the Balkan countries, showing their diverse aspirations on the peninsula. The organizers of the exhibition did not seek out unknown maps, but only those published in periodicals, in widely distributed pamphlets and in school atlases, as these have a strong impact on public sentiment and allow us to trace the main attitudes towards the central part of the peninsula during the period from the mid-19th century to the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913.
The event will take place on June 2, 2023, at 11 a.m. in the Central Lobby of the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library (88 Vasil Levski Blvd.).
