On October 16, 2023, Stefan Peikov suddenly passed away. It is difficult to characterize his work. He graduated in biology but worked mainly in the field of history and the organisation of historical, ethnographic and regional studies. He was a member of Prof. Alexander Fol's team and worked for many years in Strandzha. He took an active part in the preparation of initiatives promoted by Lyudmila Zhivkova, "Roerich", "Leonardo da Vinci" and the International Assembly "Flag of Bulgaria". He took an active part in the preparation of initiatives promoted by Lyudmila Zhivkova, such as "Roerich," "Leonardo da Vinci," the International Assembly "Flag of Peace," and the program to mark the 1300th anniversary of Bulgaria.
During the last two decades of his life, he became increasingly interested in cartography. The organization he headed, GEOPAN, prepared and published maps of a number of coastal municipalities such as Primorsko and Burgas, maps of Strandzha, a map of the ancient Bulgarian defensive trench "Erkesia" . The exhibition of historical maps related to the Black Sea was shown not only in Bulgaria, but also in Turkey, Georgia, and at the UN headquarters in New York. He created the first exhibition of digital copies of old maps outdoors in the Petrovani area. Over the past two years, as part of the Heritage BG Center, he was one of the organizers of the exhibition: European Cartography of Macedonia from the Mid-19th Century to the Balkan Wars, which has already been shown at the National Library and the National Historical Museum, and is being prepared for display at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Center in Skopje in December. He was preparing an extremely interesting and innovative project for the Erkesia Wall, which was to start in November 2023.
On October 16, he passed away with a smile on his face, extending his hand in greeting to Dimitar Minev, director of the Ivan Vazov National Library, and Ivan Ilchev, head of the Heritage BG Cultural Center. Together with them, he was supposed to open an exhibition in Plovdiv in front of curious students from Plovdiv University.
We bow our heads in memory of him!
