An exhibition at the National Historical Museum recalls European ethnic maps of Macedonia

On August 1, 2023, an exhibition entitled "Macedonia in European Ethnic Cartography (mid-19th century – Balkan Wars 1912-1913)" opened at the National Historical Museum (Central Lobby).

The exhibition is dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising and the 180th anniversary of the printing in Strasbourg in 1843 of the first map in Bulgarian, covering the entire Bulgarian ethnic territory.

The exhibition is a joint project between the Center for Advanced Technologies "NASLEDSTVO BG" and Geopan - Burgas, one of the active members of the Bulgarian Cartographic Association (BKA).

After the National Historical Museum, the exhibition will be shown in Burgas and Plovdiv, enriched with a representative catalog in Bulgarian and English.

The exhibition consists of boards with dozens of ethnographic maps, mostly by European cartographers, but also includes maps by authors from the Balkan countries, showing their diverse aspirations on the peninsula. The organizers of the exhibition did not seek out unknown maps, but only those that were published in periodicals, in widely distributed pamphlets and in school atlases, as these have a strong impact on public sentiment and allow us to trace the main attitudes towards the central part of the peninsula during the period from the mid-19th century to the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913.
