
In connection with Project BG05M20P001-1.001-0001, “Establishment and Development of the Center of Excellence ‘Heritage BG’,” on October 29, 2019, the Institute for Art Studies (BAS) hosted another meeting of the participants in the seminar “PILGRIMAGE AND ART,” organized by the project “PRAYER JOURNEYS OF THE BULGARIANS IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES AND ART.”

The lecturer, Marko Katić, is a doctoral candidate at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade. The topic of his dissertation is related to the visual culture of pilgrimage in Serbia. Marko Katić has been working for years in the field of pilgrimage eulogies brought to the Balkans from the Holy Land in Palestine during the 18th and 19th centuries and is one of the few scholars engaged in this subject.
The lecture covered a wide range of topics: written sources describing pilgrims’ attitudes toward the relics brought from the Holy Land, the methods by which they were acquired, and their prices; information about workshops in Jerusalem producing items purchased by pilgrims; signed works of painting; the issue of the ethnic affiliation of the masters was also discussed.
In addition to the project participants, the seminar was attended by scholars from the Institute for Art Studies (BAS), the Institute of Literature (BAS), the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with the Ethnographic Museum (BAS), the Cyril and Methodius Research Center (BAS), the “Ivan Duychev” Center for Slavic-Byzantine Studies (Sofia University), the National Academy of Arts, restorers, and journalists.
