By a 1984 UNESCO resolution, April 18 is designated as International Day for Monuments and Sites. In honor of this day, we are launching the "Heritage BG" visual quiz. Every day through the end of April, we will post one question on our Facebook page. Along with the question, we’ll feature artifacts, museum exhibits, interesting historical events, and buildings. The winners of the visual quiz will be determined based on their answers to the 12 questions, and the winners will be announced on May 24. The prize pool includes book vouchers.
The University Botanical Garden is part of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.” It was established in 1955 on the grounds of the park at the former summer residence of Queen Maria of Romania. Today, the garden covers an area of about 65 decares and boasts the second-largest collection of large-sized cacti in Europe, after Monaco. The number of plant species cultivated in the garden exceeds 2,500, belonging to 85 families and 800 genera. Part of the plant diversity includes exotic plants: the candy tree, the moliv tree, and the metasequoia, which is also known for its sensational discovery. Scientists had believed the tree had become extinct on Earth, so they described it based on fossil remains, but five years later, during a scientific expedition in China, a living specimen was found.
