New laboratories will digitize Bulgaria’s cultural heritage
"The IEFEM archive is one of the oldest in the country and is the successor to the archive established at the National Museum, which has been preserved to this day despite the fact that during the 1940s, in the midst of World War II, bombs struck the very building that housed the museum. A significant portion of it was destroyed, along with the archival documents. However, scholars at the time managed to preserve a large portion of it, storing it in the basement of what is now School No. 7 and later transferring it to the Palace building, where the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with the Ethnographic Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences was established in the 1950s. To this day, this treasure is preserved there, but modern times demand different conditions and forms of its preservation and presentation. The scientific archive holds plates with images, drawings, and watercolors in addition to the texts, which fully represent our folk culture.

"The good news is that the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore has joined the national program 'Science and Education for Smart Growth.' We are a key link in the consortium led by Sofia University, "Heritage BG." The goal is to establish three laboratories for the digitization of cultural heritage. Two of them will be in our archives and one in the Ethnographic Museum. The ethnographic archive of the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies, for example, has been collected since the founding of the National Ethnographic Museum (1906). There are unique items! The National Ethnographic Museum alone has over 50,000 artifacts that we will strive to digitize—they are not only from Bulgaria. And the National Center for Cultural Heritage preserves records of all the folk art festivals in Koprivshtitsa...
